From 11th of August 2025 urine samples will only be accepted at the front desk if requested by a Nevells Road Surgery clinician (GP or nurse).
How will it work?
If you have symptoms of a urine infection, please submit a Total Triage form via our website, via the NHS App, call us or walk in and we can complete one for you.
The clinician will review the information you have given and send you a questionnaire to complete if further information is required- this will replace the paper form used previously. The clinician will then advise if they need you to drop off a urine sample and what happens next.
Why are we making this change?
When we reviewed the process, we noticed several things were happening that could better managed. For instance:
- Urine samples were often not required, unnecessary testing was performed and on occasion, inappropriate treatment given
- The reason for the sample was unclear. This led to the wrong action being taken, resulting in a delay in treatment or required a second sample to be dropped off, causing inconvenience to patients
- Samples were submitted with missing information which could lead to the wrong decision being made, or a script being sent to the wrong pharmacy
Please remember, a Pharmacy might be a better place to provide your treatment. For example, if you are female aged 16-64 years and not had a urine infection in the past 3 months. If appropriate, our clinician may re-direct you to your local pharmacy. This allows our GPs to focus on seeing the patients who really need them and keep appointment waiting times to a minimum.
